SAFTA's 2012

The 6th Annual South African Film & Television Awards

The ultimate prize: The goldem horn given to every award acceptor
Some people might see them as the South African version of the well known Golden Globes. Whatever the case; the SAFTA’s are an event where actors, producers, editors etc in South Africa get recognition for their remarkable performances. The 6th Annual Awards took place on Sunday the 11th of March 2012 at Gallagher Estate in Midrand and were aired on SABC3. Among the biggest winners of the night was the new series on Mnet; The Wild, SABC1’s educational drama Intersexions, SABC2’s Ga Re Dumele and the winner of the night’s Public Vote Award for Best Soap; Isidingo.

A shocking withdrawal

Besides the fact that the awards failed to begin airing at the correct time of 19h30; there was yet another PR blunder which took place. Popular South African television channel; ETV decided to withdraw its entire programme and presenter participation from the awards.  Although they disagreed to provide a reason for doing this; the SAFTA team believed it was due to ETV not agreeing with their way of judging.  This was a very bad move by the channel because it reflects to their stakeholders in a very bad way, especially with concerns to the Public Vote category. Any supporter would be disappointed to find out that the votes they contributed for their favourite shows would completely go to waste!

  1. I really think Etv made a shocking announcement when they decided to withdraw from the awards. A lot of people, including myself; love the channel and really hoped to see them take home the people's vote award. However; without the correct motivation people get disappointed! The shows and actors that were rewarded trully deserved the wins!

  2. The success of any organisation is dependent on its stakeholders which include the viewers in the case of ETV. To avoid any chaos, they could have at least made an announcement to it's viewers to let them know why they made the choice of withdrawing. However; at the end of the day, the final decision was made and the awards still went on regardless

  3. I'm still not happy about Naomi from Rhythm City not being one of the nominees in the category fro best actress in a soap. I honestly hope this wasn't because of Etv's withdrawal or unless ETV withdrew because of that. In any case though, it still leaves us; ETV viewers in the black on why the decision was made by the channel

  4. It is still unclear as to why ETV made that decision. However; the stakeholder should always be considered first by any organisation!

  5. I think all the winners really deserved their wins. However; the show had a lot of slip-ups such as the sound and microphones at a point in time! That really made me lose interest as the show went on!

  6. It all falls back on the event organisers. The success of any event is a reflection of its organisers. Hopefully such mistakes won't be witnessed at next years event
